Description

This image of M33 in Triangulum was taken at the native focal length 545mm f6.8 pushing my tiny Star Adventurer mount to its limits. As I eluded to in my last post my dew control system failed, literally blowing a fuse, and I had to resort to a little 12v hair drier that I keep for just such eventualities. Comprising 3 min exposures, I managed 52 subs which I calibrated, stacked and processed entirely in Astro Pixel Processor - I am impressed with this program. I also took a few 10 min subs, at the end of the run, and was amazed that the Star Adventurer with RA guiding only, produced  a very reasonable image (see revision).

M33 does not always give up its structure and detail easily, and can be quite bland - see my previous posts of this object. I am much happier with the level of saturation and detail in this image. After the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, this is the third member of our local group, lying 2.7m LY from earth, and containing around 40 billion stars, it should be easily visible with the naked eye from a Bortle 2 site, and I have witnessed this many times. This year, I had difficulty making it out - either due to the amount of water vapour in the air, increasing light pollution, or my deteriorating eyesight - probably all three!

It is peppered with nebulae and bright star clouds - active star forming regions, and some of these are annotated in the plate solve. I think it is far from bland and makes for an interesting target, if quite challenging to process. I hope you like my latest version.
